Warp v.40 Restarting …

I am having a recurring, but erratic, problem with Warp 4.0 restarting.
This happens only when I try to use tcpip (modem connection) and at the
same time use windows or dos programs.  It also appears to be load
related; the more programs I run at once, the greater the likelihood of a
crash/restart.

Also, the restarts are strange.  The program I am running in the
foreground/active window almost always is unaffacted.  However, I watch
in horror as the desktop shuts down (!!!) and restarts — in fact, it
even archives the desktop while I watch (I have the archive on boot
option set). Nonetheless, the foreground program continues to work after
the restart, usually (sometimes it freezes, though).  A similar problem
that occurs less frequently, but seems to be related, is that the desktop
shuts down leaving only the foreground program — and there is no
restart!  THis requires the vulcan salute when I wish to shutdown, as the
taskbar, warp center, and os/2 command line are all unavailable (unless
the foreground program happened to be the os/2 command line).

There are usually no errors; occassionally there is a GPF preceding the
shutdown.

My system is homemade:

Shuttle Hot 557 (430vx based MB w/very recent Award Bios)
        Cyrix 6×86 P166+
        32MB EDO
        Trident 9680
        Soundblaster AWE32 PnP

Any ideas?  I am completely stymied.

Basedevice IBM2AST1.SYS in error!

I have an AST Ascentia P50 notebook with 2 PCMCIA slots. But I can’t
get OS/2 Warp to detect these slots. I got a PCMCIA modem a month ago,
but I have still not seen it run with OS/2 Warp (works fine with
Win95, but thats not OS/2!!!).

Everytime time I boot I get a message saying that OS/2 can’t install
BASEDEV=IBM2AST1.SYS. I have installed PCMCIA support as for Ascentia
800N. I have looked all over the WWW, Usenet tryied different things
but until now nothing have helped.

Do I realy have the only notebook with PCMCIA support, that OS/2 can’t
handle!

Should I realy drop OS/2 and go to WinNT! That can’t be real.

Best regards
Torben

Merlin, Warp and Fix Pak 26.

Just thought that I would throw in my two cents worth.  I have been useing
Warp (3.0 Red Spine) for about 2 and a half years now and when Merlin arived I
jumped on it with joy.  About 2 months later I sadly backed tracked to 3.0
again.  Why?  Well it was just two unstable on MY system.  Constent lockups
with out any common cause that I could see, aside from trying to multi-task.
Download a file, use a text editor, copy a file, view a gif, sooner or later
it would lockup.
So I Formated the partition and re-installed 3.0. It is (was) a little slower
it seemed, but more stable.  So I can’t play DOOM 2 or Quake unless I boot to
DOS.  Bummer.
A week or so ago I set up NetScape to download and install Fix Pak 26.  Aside
from takeing about 5 hours to download (with a 14.4 modem) it all went well
and installed the Pak on both partitions on my computer that have Warp on
them.  I keep drives C: and I: set up with Warp and use I: as partition to
Backup from and as a safty partition.  Why not its only 55 meg with space left
over for a minimum setup.
Since installing FP26 the only problem that I have had with it is in one game
(a Windows game that my wife likes).  And even that is nothing major, the game
acts a little flaky on startup but then runs fine.
What does all this mean?  Well when frends of mine who are still runing
Merlin tell me that with FP X, it has become stable for them I’ll give it
another try.  Untill then Warp 3.0 is still a very nice OS.

For Lack of anything fancier to use as a signature.

Netscape runaway thread

I realise that this has been posted several times, but maybe I missed
something at some point.  Does anyone know when Netscape is planning on
fixing the runaway thread problem that has been around sine beta 2?

I’m currently running Warp with Netscape V2.02 and the plugin pack.
I’ve reinstalled the original seamless.dll file off of the Warp CD.  I
also have Java, the Java Compiler, and Javascript disabled.

With the above configuration I can just about guarantee that within 5
minutes of use of the navigator the runaway thread problem hits.  (I’ve
learned to do a pstat and determine the process id of navigator and
typing in a kill statement in preperation for a system slow down before
loading a single page).

FixPack 26 problems

Since I installed FP26 I have had a couple of problems that I wonder if anyone
else has experienced.

When I exit a full-screen Win-OS2 session, I get a black screen with a cursor
in the upper left corner. To get my desktop back, I have to Alt-Esc, then
Ctrl-Esc for the Window list, then select the Windows program, right click and
select ‘Close’. This doesn’t happen with Windows programs that I run in a
window, but a couple of my programs won’t run that way.

The other strange happening could be described as a ‘memory leak’. I have a
486DX4-100 with 32 Meg RAM and a swapfile set at 20Meg. On my system
resources monitor, MEMSIZE, I have 12 M physical memory free when I reboot.
After opening and closing programs, usually over a few days without rebooting,
I can be down to 6 or 8 Meg with no programs open. At this point a program
usually freezes, or ends suddenly, or some other strange thing occurs.
Sometimes I can shut down properly and other times I can’t. When I reboot,
everything works for a few days.

I am using blue spine Warp 3.0 and this is the first FixPack I have installed.
I installed it from the Internet website and it seemed to install successfully.
Has anyone had these problems? Any suggestions about what I can do about
either of them?

Thanks in advance,
Nancy

OS/2 API problem? HELP

Dear netters,
Please forgive me if I repeat any old problem.
I am writing some stress routines to check
os/2′s capability in allocating and synchronizing
resources like pipe, queue, process, threads and
semaphores etc. I found two problems while working
with process.

   1. More than 850 child can be created by my
routine but it can kill upto 254 childs maximum,
after that DosKillProcess() returns error, which says
INVALID_PROC_ID. Probably maxm creation is limited
by my systems resource, P166MHz, 48MB RAM with
1.5 GB HDD running OS/2 Warp v4. But this child
PIDs are highly valid as shown by "pstat" command
of os/2. But why this limitation in killing child
procs. Maximum no of killed procID is very near
the magic no 0xFF, any relation?
It does not give any error while creating
more than 255 child processes.

   2. If child creation/killing is continued in
cycle (i.e. create ‘n’ proc, sleep, kill ‘n’
proc and repeat), after some time DosExecPgm returns
with code which says ERROR_NOT_ENOUGH_MEMORY.
"Theseus2" and "pstat" shows childs killed properly,
i.e. at any point of time there are maximum ‘n’ childs.
(‘n’ is 10, 20 or 50 etc). Does this behaviour mean
that after allocating any resource to a process
the OS has to wait till the parent/main process
dies? Even if the child terminates properly, the
OS does not get back the resource allocated to it?

Any suggestion/ideas are welcome. Thanks a lot in
advance.

FYI: child procs does nothing but DosSleep(one-day).

intermittent lockups

Hello All,

I recently upgraded my office computer and since then have been getting
intermittent lockups with warp 3 (red, fp26 installed).  The old system
was a 486-100 ISA, the new a P133 PCI.  I keep the machine going 24/day.

I did the upgrade by swapping in the old hard drives and upgrading the
video drivers.  I also swapped in the old Future domain SCSI card and
ethernet card (both ISA).  Both work fine.

The old system never died without some identifiable cause (e.g. netscape
beta).  The new system seems to lock up in the night–dead lock. No
mouse, no keyboard, nothing moving.

If any of you can send a hint, please do.

Thanks,

SYS3175 error with Voice Type?

Hi all,

Just checking if anyone has run into a SYS3175 error with Voice Type
(dictation or navigation), specifically with respect to the file WWDLL.DLL?
If so, is there a fix or work-around for this problem?  Ever since I enrolled
with VT, I seem to be getting this error, especially when I have a number of
things running at once (WordPerfect 6.1 in a seamless win-os/2 session, VT
quick dictation window, VT itself, internet connection with MR/2 ICE and EmTec
News, Xit, and CAD Commander…at least those are the ones I remember).

Anyway, any help would be appreciated on this.

Thanks, Scott

Printing does not go well.

Hello there!

Who knows something about creating a good report in VisualAge for Smalltalk.
Normally, I use a Report part, whereto I send my data. But …. in the new
version of OS/2 Warp (version 4.0) the printer does not like it, and throws out
only black lines. Anybody familiair with this problem??
Is this a problem of OS/2 or a problem of VisualAge?

Please let me know. (mvdd…@worldaccess.nl)

tn3270?

In Warp 3.0 the internet package came with a tn3270 program which I
could use when connecting to a shell account.  Though with Merlin there
seems to be no program that allows tn3270 included,  When I had both
Warp’s installed on my system I tried copying tn3270 from warp 3.0 to
the merlin system, and I tried running the tn3270 from the warp 3.0
system while in merlin, but to no avail.  Any suggestions greatly
appreciated.

TIA,
clarke
