WIN-OS2 killing my system

I’ve got a problem where the system appears to be continuing to run, but
I am not able to do anything except move the mouse.

Normally during the day I am in and out of WIN-OS2 sessions all the
time.  Since I installed Warp v4, the 2nd or 3rd time will lock.  The
system starts to run the session.  Then CPU usage drops to about 2 or 3
percent and I am unable to do anything but a alt-ctrl-del twice.  I’m
running OB Pro 1.5, so I can watch the CPU usage.  It and the clock
continue to work.

Also, I have to press alt-ctrl-del twice to get the system to reboot.
Someone mentioned that the problem might be related to Netscape/2 GA.
Yes, I am running Netscape/2.

What settings do I have wrong.  I don’t claim to be an OS/2 expert.

p.s.  This is the same condition I get on my home machine.

Quantum IDE problem with Merlin – terrible noises from the HDD

The subject line says it all.
My configuration:
MB: Chaintech IFM 586 (on-board controller)
ELSA Winner 1000 Trio/V (S3)
32 MB
HDD’s:
1st port WD 1,2 GB EIDE
2nd port master Conner IDE 402 MB and slave Quantum 421 MB (both IDE).

The sounds which comes from the quantum disk is terrible.
Every time this happens the HDD’s controller stops and starts again – but the system halts.
I found the online info about this, but no help.
Has anybody had this problem and sucessfully solved it?
TIA a lot.

Dedicated Dos hanging at '–> OS/2…'

Hi,

I have been using Dedicated Dos so my kids can play a few games that do not
seem to like OS/2 very much.  About 1/2 of the time OS/2 fails to restart after
the game is ended.  We see the machine starting OS2 with:

–> OS/2…

on the screen.  The disk light stays on for a second or two and then it just
sits there (I have waited up to a 1/2 hour…).  To recover I have to use an F2
boot.  The os2 config.sys and autoexec.bat are sitting in \OS2\SYSTEM with
an os2 file extension.  Copying them to the Root allows OS2 to boot.

I have also seen a frozen mouse once after a good return.

Does anyone know what is happening?  Any work arounds or fixes?

TIA,

Ed Tomlinson

Multimedia hangs my system. Using Process Commander and ODPro

Please, can anybody be of help?

After upgrading my system from a AMD486DX4-100 Soyo 4SAW2 MB to an IBM
6x86P166+ rev 3.7, AcerOpen AP533 MB, I made the mistake of also
changing the soundcard. I exchanged the ESS 1868 I had for a SB 16 ASP
that was lying around unused. I removed and tried to reinstall
multimedia uncountable times, and only managed after clearing some
badly defined classes with checkini (wptools19). Now, my system hangs
sometimes, but always when using multimedia. Either launching Klondike
Solitary, running Galactic Civilizations 2.5, or simply playing a CD.
I have Unimaint 5, with the latest upgrades, which is unable to find
anything wrong with my system. Checkini also doesn’t find anything
wrong. Process Commander only beeps when I press ctrl-alt-del, or
ctrl-alt-f12 (for a shutdown). Ctrl-alt-esc still reboots the system,
though.

I think that the problem must be related to my multimedia install, but
I am not sure if removing multimedia, recreating the desktop with OD
object package, and checking all with checkini and Unimaint will help.
I am afraid only a full reinstall will do. Any suggestions?

Warp 3 – Memory Problem

Warp 3.0 Fullpak – Fixpack 026

486 DX2 66mhz – 16 meg of mem

With memory prices going down, I purchased 4-16meg 60ns SIMMs.

Now OS/2 is very unstable. Trap this and trap that. I took half the
SIMMs out (32meg) and same instability. Re-installed old SIMMs and we
are back in business. I have to believe that OS/2 doesn’t like 60ns
SIMMs. I am going to try to boot a DOS only system and see. My BIOS
likes the new SIMMs.

Any suggestions???

HELP PLEASE: Problems installing TCPIP support in Merlin. :-((

Hi everybody

and thanks in advance for the help.

The Problem appears when I try to Upgrade my old Warp3 for
Win (red box) to the new Merlin (I use TCP only for the Internet
Connection, not for a LAN).

In Warp 3 I installed the IAK in the subdir E:\DFUE\TCPIP.

During the upgrade, the Merlin Install-routine installs the TCPIP in
the  default-directory  E:\TCPIP.

Because I didn’t like that (too many folders at the root), I
deinstalled The TCP-Apps and tried to install again with
it’s own install :\CID\IMG\TCPAPPS\INSTALL.EXE from
CD-ROM.

From that moment I had a PROBLEM:

The Install finished with no errors. All files and icons are in
place….. but ‘refuse’ to work….

All executables from the TCPIP-Folder are ‘dead’.

That means: when I double-click at the ProgramObject from the
WPS, instead to start the prog comes a splash ‘teaching’ me to
check the path bla bla bla…

When I double-click direct to the exe-file, the settings-notebook
comes up….

Later , after some (65) trials to corect the fault and after I loosed
my old WPS :-( ((, I observed that some classes like AdvDial, AdvUser
etc are not registered.
When I try to register ‘manualy’ this SOM-classes (with the HWI
SOM/WPS Class Browser), an error-message comes up…..

Trying to install the latest IBM-Dialer Update stops with an
fault-message that SETLOC1.DLL couldn’t be loaded.

Maybe some process blocks the entire folder and subfolders of TCPIP.
But which process????

The rest of Merlin works wonderfull. Win 3.1 is much more faster as in
Warp3 and and and… is nice …

An hardware influence i can exclude. At the same machine but in
another empty partition (drive d:), Merlin – Beta and a Try & By
version could be installed problemless.

Conclusions:

Followning actions don’t help anyway:

a.   Changing the CD-ROM – set
b.   Changing the Version (german-US)
c.   Erasing the os2 & os2sys.ini + the old config.sys and
      reinstalling Merlin
d.   Installing first the OS and later MPTS and TCP-Apps.

My Sytem:

486 /133 AMD; 48 MB

PCI – buss

SCSI NCR 53810 adapter with:
–  2x HD (first: 720 MB Quantum Lightning (drives c: and d:), second:
1 GB Fujitsu (drives e:, f:, g:);
–  1xToshiba CD-ROM drive

ATI WinTurbo 2 MB graphic adapter

And here is my ‘last wish’:
Can somebody tell me how to ‘recuperate’ in Merlin  my WPS-Backups
made with RoboSave under Warp3 ???
RoboSave gives error messages, saying ‘Wrong Operating System…’

Regards

Droped serial characters when using kernel debugger

I’m getting dropped characters when using the kernel debugger.  I’ve
tried several different speeds, different cables, and sio or not sio.
It’s between a generic Pentium system and my ThinkPad 755c, docked or
not in a Dock II.

Here, get a flavor of this annoying phenomenon:

printer driver

With Dual Boot my Tandy DMP-134 Printer works in DOS/WIN boot
but not with an OS/2 boot. I tried the IBMNull driver to try and
pass thru OS/2 settings but the printer output is still giberish.
